Introduction
Welcome to my page. I am Mario Torres and I am a junior at Arizona State University focusing on earning my Bachelors of Science in Psychology. The focus on psychology is due to my interest in Traumatic Brian Injuries (TBI), because I am a survivor of one. Due to a accident in November of 1997, my prognosis for a full recovery was grim. I was not expected to wake from my coma, but I did after three months. Once awake, I was back in the state of infancy. I had to relearn all the basic skills in life, such as: talking, chewing, swallowing, feeding myself, wiping my face, smiling and many other skills we take for granted. As the process of rehabilitation
continued, I went to education as a form of therapy. Learning new things has became my driving force in my recovery.
Part of the struggle of my rehabilitation was remembering who I was because I had retrograde amnesia. I struggled and would become frustrated when during a conversation, someone would bring up a memory that I could not remember. While focusing on my education each step forward was a positive stage of my rehabilitation or rebirth. I earned my High School Diploma, an Associates Degree in Psychology, and an Associates Degree in Drug Studies. After my internship for Drug Studies, I was hired at the internship site. The site was a out-patient rehabilitation center for substance abuse. I was able to utilized the tools of my recovery to assist the clientele I facilitated. One of the strongest tools that I use is my personal testimony. I have shared my recovery story numerous times with my clientele and I believe it has had a strong impact. It has been beneficial for the clients to hear my story, and their stories have had an impact on me also.
